How respiratory viruses in early life may lead to chronic lung diseases

CLARITY is an international research project investigating the link between early-life infection with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and the development of chronic lung diseases, such as asthma.
Although RSV has long been associated with asthma, scientists still do not fully understand how respiratory viruses cause long-term damage to the lungs. It is also unclear how this damage, particularly in the developing lungs of young children, might be repaired. CLARITY is here to find the answers.
Our research project brings together the key pieces of the puzzle to provide much-needed clarity. By identifying genetic risk factors and understanding the underlying biological mechanisms, we lay the scientific groundwork for the development of targeted therapies.
CLARITY’s European consortium combines leading expertise across disciplines – from viral genetics and artificial intelligence to immunology and organoid biology.
